In the world of server administration, remote management, and secure data transfer, Secure Shell (SSH) occupies a central place. It's not just a protocol; it's an encrypted tunnel that allows you to interact with a remote machine as if you were sitting right behind its keyboard. For many novice system administrators and developers, SSH connection may seem somewhat mysterious, but in fact it is a fairly simple process that requires only a few key elements.

Imagine a situation: your website is hosted on a remote server, and you need to make urgent configuration changes. Or perhaps you are developing an application and want to deploy it on a VM located in another city. In both cases, SSH will become your indispensable assistant. It provides not only command execution, but also secure file transfer, making it a versatile tool.

So, how do I open this secret door and establish an SSH connection? You will need the following key components:

1. SSH Client: This is a program on your local computer that initiates an SSH connection to a remote server. For Linux and macOS users, the SSH client is usually already embedded in the terminal. Just open a terminal window and you're ready to go. Windows users will need to install a third-party SSH client such as PuTTY (one of the most popular and free options) or use the built-in OpenSSH client via PowerShell (starting with Windows 10).

2. IP address or domain name of the remote server: To establish a connection, you need to know the address of the server you want to connect to. This can be a numeric IP address (for example, 192.168.1.100) or a domain name (for example, [incorrect URL deleted]).

3. SSH port: By default, the SSH server listens for incoming connections on port 22. However, the server administrator may have changed this port for security reasons. If the port differs from the standard one, you will need to specify it when connecting.

4. Credentials: To access the remote server, you will need the username and password of the account that exists on that server. For security reasons, it is strongly recommended to use strong and unique passwords. An alternative and more secure authentication method is to use SSH keys, which are a pair of cryptographic keys (public and private) and allow you to connect without entering a password.

Steps to connect:

Once you have all the necessary data, the connection process is quite simple.:

For Linux and macOS (via terminal):

Open a terminal and enter a command in the following format:

ssh username@remote_ip_or_domain -p port_number

Where:

username is your username on the remote server.
remote_ip_or_domain is the IP address or domain name of the remote server.
-p port_number is an optional parameter that is used only if the SSH server is listening on a non-standard port. Replace the port_number with the actual port number.
For example, if your username is on the webmaster server, the server's IP address is 10.0.0.5 and the SSH port is standard (22), the command will look like this:

ssh webmaster@10.0.0.5

After entering the command, you will be prompted to enter the password for your webmaster account. After successful authentication, you will see the command prompt of the remote server, and you will be able to execute commands.

For Windows (via PuTTY):

Run the PuTTY program.
In the "Host Name (or IP address)" field, enter the IP address or domain name of the remote server.
In the "Port" field, make sure that the correct SSH port is specified (default is 22). If the port is non-standard, change it.
Select "SSH" in the "Connection type" section.
Click the "Open" button.
A terminal window will open where you will be prompted to enter the username and then the password from the remote server. After successful authentication, you will have access to the server's command prompt.

Remember that SSH provides an encrypted connection, but security also depends on your actions. Use strong passwords or SSH keys, update the software on your computer and server regularly, and be careful when executing commands, especially with root privileges.
